The Gap Band fue una Banda de EE.UU., de música funk y soul; grupo que saltó a la fama durante los años 1970 y 1980 con canciones muy en el estilo bailable y tambien con sentimentales baladas de amor. Integrada por los hermanos Charlie, Ronnie y Robert Wilson, en 1967 formaron una banda llamada Greenwood, Archer y Pine Street Band en su ciudad natal de Tulsa, Oklahoma. Luego, en 1979 se acortó el nombre por el de Gap Band.
La banda lanzó su primer disco en el sello Indie en 1974 con poco éxito. En un comienzo, el grupo tuvo doce músicos, incluido el baterista Ronnie Smith. Luego quedaron solo los tres hermanos y el productor Leon Russell a la cabeza, el grupo comenzó a encontrar el éxito en 1978 con canciones como «You Dropped A Bomb On Me», «I’m in love» y «Shake», este último se convertio en Top 10 de R & B hit.
Éxito
En 1979, el grupo cambió su nombre a The Gap Band y encontró el éxito con el innovador single ”I Don’t Believe You Wanna Get Up and Dance (Oops!)”. Pero fue en la década de 1980 que el grupo encontró su mayor éxito, con canciones como ”Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Want To Hurt Me)”, “Humpin”, ”Yearning For Your Love”, “Outstanding”, “You Dropped A Bomb On Me”, “I Found My Baby”, “Early In The Morning”, y “Party Train”, convirtiéndose en un grupo icono. El grupo encontró su mayor éxito en el Reino Unido en 1987 su single “Big Fun” alcanzando el número 4 en las listas británicas (“Oops Upside Your Head” también alcanzó el #6 en 1980).
Su éxito se redujo a finales de 1984, aunque han seguido grabando discos y están constantemente en gira. En 1996 publicó The Gap Band: Live and Well, una recopilación de sus mayores hits.
